Water disputes between states in federal India

"It is said that the next world war may be fought for water." This clearly highlights the significance of water for everyone. Water has always been the most crucial resource. The everyday utility of water is well known to us. It touches upon every sphere of human life, from household purposes like drinking, cooking and washing to agricultural purposes to industrial, water is required by everyone. The ancient civilizations like Mesopotamia civilization flourished on the bank of river Nile and Indus valley civilization, on the bank of river Indus. One prominent reason why Magadha empire rose to become a mighty kingdom was the presence of rivers Ganges, Son and Champa that encircled it on the three sides and made it impregnable for the enemy. River water has been a matter of dispute and powerful kingdoms in the Indian history had wanted to establish their supremacy and control over the fertile areas of rivers. The dispute of "Raichur Doab" is well known by us. It was

Root cause of our social and national degradation is our treatment of women.

It was a bustling Sunday morning. As a daily routine, I grabbed a cup of tea and sat down with the newspaper in my other hand. The front page had something that caught my eyes. In Sikaar, Rajasthan, doctors have thought of starting a unique practice. When a baby girl is born in the hospitals of the district, they’ll reduce the hospital fee by 50%, gift the mother and provide concessions to baby’s check up till she gets ten years old. But, should I be happy regarding the step taken by doctors in a state where girls and women go through hardships or should I mourn at the ills present in the society? India, at present enjoys a fine position on international platform. When it speaks, the world stops and listens. In the near future we’ll become a superpower. But, we cannot ensure holistic development in true letter and spirit unless and until the women of our nation are ill treated. Our Indian society won’t be labelled as a PROGRESSIVE SOCIETY unless we let our women proceed in all sp

‘Overdependence on Technology will Advance Human Development’

Human beings have been blessed with the ability to think, use their mind for a reason. And with their skills and abilities, they have successfully managed to convert the "gifts of nature" as "resources". Resources that can benefit living beings, that can create a better world. These resources enabled humans to strive to invent and through this ability, humans have developed society and made technological inventions. And since then, technology has been present in every possible sphere. The way we think, the way we live, the way we communicate, the way we travel, the way we learn, every possible thing has been changed due to technological advancements. It has simplified the way we do things. Due to technological advancements health care facilities have improved and doctors have been successful in saving innocent lives. Now, most challenging diseases can be cured with the development of new drugs and health care facilities. Technology has prolonged the human life

It is hard to free fools from the chains they revere.

Jean Jacques Rousseau, the great philosopher and writer of his times, said, "Man is born free, but he is everywhere in chains." By this he meant that though 'freedom' is a person's birthright but society puts numerous restrictions on a person. And, the great French historian and writer, Voltaire replied to him, saying, "It is hard to free fools from the chains they revere." With this, he meant that humans have become so habituated of restrictions that they cannot do without these "chains" that hold them back, but still they love these chains! People have started believing and accepting the "status quo". Humans have started "worshipping" the chains and it is very difficult to free someone's mind that has become comfortable with the chains. For instance, humans very well know, that CLIMATE CHANGE is real! Global warming is alarming. International organizations and powerful as well as less powerful countries show conc

Fire is a good servant but a bad master

FIRE is said to be the greatest discovery done by humans. Centuries ago, when men discovered fire, they found it of immense benefits. Before its invention, humans used to eat raw food, they were not known with the practice of cooking. But as they discovered fire, they used it as per their needs. Humans used fire to cook food, they found that the cooked food was more delicious. Also, they used fire to keep animals away from themselves and their food! Fire became an important thing for humans since then. During wintery nights, fire was used to provide warmth to humans. It helped them to show the right path in the dark nights. They could move easily to places, life became easier and safer than ever before. Same goes for today's man too, he has been successful in producing numerous things with the help of fire. Fire has resulted in the evolution of man. But, fire is something that needs to be kept under control. Because once it gets out of human control it can create havoc by kee

"Many people lose the small joys in the hope for the big happiness." This quote by Pearl. S. Buck tells of the stark reality of the present times. We live in a funny world, where comparisons are done for almost everything. If a child stands second in her class, she's compared with the one who stood first. If a person gets five hundred rupees as pocket money, he compares his money with his friend who gets seven hundred as pocket money. If Mr. X gets a package of 10 lacs, he compares himself with Mr. Y, who is getting 12 lacs! But one thing should be noticed, that comparing ourselves with others does not always do good to us. Instead it ruins the joyous moments and spoils our precious time. Instead, the student who stood second can be appreciated and encouraged to get even better. The person getting lesser pocket money, should get satisfied with what he is getting. Mr. X should think of those who even lesser packages and do his work efficiently with the hope that his

Aristotle, in his book, 'Politics' wrote that, "Man is by nature a social animal." And since then, we have grown up learning and listening that we humans are social beings. Gone are those days, when human beings used to stay isolated from each other, confined within imaginary walls. Time has changed, people have changed, and so have their needs. In one way or the other, humans depend to a great extent on society. This dependence, makes us, social beings. We, in our families often hear our elders saying that 'Zamaana bahot kharab hai' that 'the world is bad'. They often compare the old days with the contemporary times, old people with this generation and conclude that people of their times, were kinder, more reliable and trustworthy. They advice their kids or grandchildren not to spend much time outside or get much friendly with others. But why so? Who is responsible for the change in human behaviour? Can people sustain without each others' help

Trust take years to Build, Seconds to Break

Image
"Trust me!" These are the two words we get to hear the most. We keep saying this to others and others keep saying this to us. But what exactly is trust? Is it honesty of a person towards you? Or is someone's kindness towards you? Or is it someone's truthfulness? Well, 'Trust' is a trait of believing in 'honesty' and 'reliability' of others. When a person starts developing faith in someone, he/she starts trusting him/her. Being trustworthy is the most valuable asset. Trust is required in every possible sphere. Be it in a family, or in friendship, in business or in an organization. Then, question arises, that what makes trust, so important? Can we not do without trusting one another? Trust is required everywhere because it brings loyalty. It is natural, if you trust a person deeply, the chances of you playing with his/her trust will be minimal. Similarly, trust comes with expectations. Here, expectations are not 'gains' but expect

Cleanliness is next to Godliness

Have you ever wondered, when we were small kids why our parents emphasized to clean our teeth twice a day, to bathe daily? And when we grew up, we are asked to keep our study table neat and tidy, books in order in the book shelf. All this, because a clean person earns good names, is praised and liked by all. We all must have heard of the popular proverb that 'Cleanliness is Godliness'. It simply means, that cleanliness leads to goodness in every walk of life. The practice of cleanliness keeps our body, mind and soul clean and peaceful. Cleanliness helps in shaping up our personality to a large extent. A person with clean body and mind has good habits, which are praised widely. It helps to develop confidence and self respect of any person. Clean habits with nice dressing sense creates good impression on others and good reputation in the society because cleanliness reflects a clean character of the person. And not only this, cleanliness infuses positivity in a person. It brin

Honesty is the best policy.

Which is that one thing that looks good on everybody? No matter which religion you belong to, from which place you come, how old you are, it suits you perfectly? Which is that one thing that lets you sleep peacefully with no regrets no grudges at heart? Of course, that one most important thing is HONESTY. It is one quality which everyone admires, which everyone wants to see in others. Staying truthful to self and others, not cheating self and others is what is called being honest. As rightly said by Benjamin Franklin, honesty is the best policy! And this proverb holds much relevance even today and shall continue to hold relevance forever. When Simran was a kid, she had gone to a near by shop to buy some chocolates. There, she met, Mr. Verma, her neighbour and greeted him. He took his stuff, bid bye to Simran and left the shop. What Simran found that by mistake, Mr. Verma had dropped a thousand rupees note there. She picked it up immediately and ran after her uncle to give the m
